Community Hours Service Log

Why report this?

Girl Scouts are doing an incredible amount of work in the community, and we need to capture these good deeds. It helps us to know both how much work and what kind of work Girl Scouts have given back in a particular community. This is used when seeking collaborators, speakers, sponsorships and financial contributions including United Way.

What is community service?

Anything troops/groups, service units or individuals do for an individual, group or the community. Examples:

  • Raking senior citizen's yards (S)
  • Conducting food drive for the local food pantry (D)
  • Making cards for nursing homes (S)
  • Conducting a flag ceremony (C)
  • Senior troop helps with childcare at a training event (G)
  • Making ornaments for Fantasy of Trees (K) (benefits Children’s Hospital)
  • Planting flowers/beautification (E)
  • Reading to children (K)
  • Adopt a grandparent (S)
  • Projects giving back to troop meeting places (C)
  • Recycling (E)
  • Junior troop helps a Daisy troop with an activity (G)
  • Collecting books for a book drive (D)
  • Parades/Veterans Day/Memorial Day remembrances (C)

So what are the letters at the end of the examples listed above?
These letters represent categories of service. This will help us know and share the type of service being done. Also, this will help leaders track what types of service the girls are participating in. Girls enjoy a well rounded variety of types of activities when giving back to the community. The categories are:

  • (C) – Community
  • (D) – Donation Drives
  • (E) – Environment
  • (G) – Service to Girl Scouts
  • (K) – Kids
  • (S) – Senior Citizens

If you are ever unsure which category to select, choose (C) Community.

How can community service be reported?

Fill out a sheet at the monthly service unit meeting
OR – fill out a sheet and mail it to the council office or drop it by

How frequently do we need to report?

As frequently as works best for you. You can report on it each time you do a project, each month – especially if you are doing it at a service unit meeting, or you can keep this sheet for the entire year and turn it in with your Annual Troop/Group Finance Report and the Thinking Back & Looking Ahead.

Community Service is an integral part of Girl Scouting. It is evident throughout our rich history, the Girl Scout Promise and the Girl Scout Law, and instills good community values in our girls.
