Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council celebrates the 2008 Girl Scout Women of Achievement Gala

Knoxville, Tennessee (March 16, 2008):  Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council is proud to honor former Girl Scouts who are today’s “Women of Achievement.”  Girl Scouting’s mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.  Tanasi celebrates three women who fulfill this mission as leading East Tennessee professionals.  The 2008 Women of Achievement are:

• Diana Morgan, retired community relations director for the Knoxville News Sentinel
• Cynthia Moxley, president of Moxley Carmichael, Inc., Knoxville
• Phyllis Young Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League

These women will be honored at a fundraising gala at the Knoxville Convention Center May 6, 2008.  A wine reception and silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. on the concourse.  Dinner and the program begin at 7 p.m. in the ballroom.  Matt Shafer Powell, WUOT 91.9 FM news director and Girl Scout father, is master of ceremonies.  Gala tickets are $100 per person or $175 per couple.  Black tie is optional.

The keynote speaker is nationally renowned broadcast journalist Susan Stamberg, a special correspondent for National Public Radio and Girl Scout growing up.  Stamberg is the first woman to anchor a national nightly news program and has won every major award in broadcasting. She has been inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame and the Radio Hall of Fame. Beginning in 1972, Stamberg served as co-host of NPR's award-winning newsmagazine All Things Considered for 14 years. She then hosted Weekend Edition Sunday and now serves as guest host of NPR's Morning Edition and Weekend Edition Saturday, in addition to reporting on cultural issues for all the NPR programs.  Her thousands of interviews include conversations with Laura Bush, Billy Crystal, Rosa Parks, Dave Brubeck and Luciano Pavarotti. Stamberg is one of the pioneers of NPR, on staff since the network began in 1971.  A former Girl Scout, Stamberg will share how the movement shaped her life as a journalist.
