Reading Rocks

Join the Girl Scouts: Give a book,  change a life.

We know some parents are having to choose this year between books for their children or buying a gallon of milk.  Even gas for the family car is more than $3 a gallon.  We know these choices are hard.

It's a choice Girl Scouts is changing in our community.  Each year, Girl Scouts partner with U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander for a signature book drive service project called "Reading Rocks."  Girl Scouts and community members across East Tennessee donate all-new books to children who need them.  Our partners, Carpe Librum Booksellers, WBIR-TV, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, distribute those donations through Toys for Tots.

This will be our sixth year of Reading Rocks and we know that without our girls or the public, the marines would have very few books to distribute.

Because of your hard work, thousands of children received special gifts for the holidays.  Thank you -- all of you -- for sharing your favorite books with children in East Tennessee.

In 2007, Girl Scouts hoped to collect 7,000 books for Reading Rocks, surpassing a 6,000-book goal set in 2006.   In all, Girl Scouts collected a record 9,048 books for children around East Tennessee.

Special thanks to our 2007 Reading Rocks! sponsors and partners:
