More Tanasi Council treasures on display in unique museum
Knoxville, TN (October 4, 2007): There are only six museums of its kind in the United States. The Girl Scout Museum at Daisy’s Place in Knoxville is proud to boast a distinctive museum that’s now growing bigger. Museum volunteers will unveil the newly renovated and expanded Museum at Daisy’s Place on October 21, 2007, from 2p.m. - 4 p.m. at the Tanasi Girl Scout Council headquarters. Visitors will enjoy bigger displays and more Girl Scout memorabilia – some of it dating back almost a century. “We have things out that we’ve never had out before,” says Girl Scout alumna Eileen Neiler. That includes a history of Girl Scout Cookies, examples of early Girl Scout primitive camping equipment and a collection of rare Girl Scout posters. The collection also features Girl Scout uniforms through the decades. Some are available to Girl Scouts for check-out. “We are a very user-friendly museum,” says curator Joyce Maienschein. “We have hands-on things that girls can do, and our uniform try-ons are very popular.” The expanded museum also allows for larger displays in cases donated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Featured exhibits include examples of Girl Scouting in the early 1900s and the 1950s, International Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, and a science display for Girl Scouts. Visitors are also welcome to browse the Jerry Warwick Memorial Library to read Girl Scout books and letters dating back to the 1910s. The Girl Scout Museum at Daisy’s Place is located in the Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council office, 1600 Breda Drive, Knoxville.
